Designer Piano Stairs Put a Spring in the Steps

Thursday, October 29th, 2009

This is a wonderful example of how design can change behaviour. I’m intrigued to know whether this lasted or if people got bored of the novelty and went back to the elevator…

Check it out I hope you like it too.

NOWISM For New Products

Connecting more, faster with more gratification - the internet mapping project.

Connecting more, faster with more gratification - the internet mapping project.

Trendwatchers ahoy! According to the main port of call for future stuff -  Trendwatching, apparently we’re currently steaming through a sea of “NOWISM”. Good grief , er… what? Well Trendwatching defines this as:

NOWISM | “Consumers’ ingrained lust for instant gratification is being satisfied by a host of novel, important (offline and online) real-time products, services and experiences. Consumers are also feverishly contributing to the real-time content avalanche that’s building as we speak. As a result, expect your brand and company to have no choice but to finally mirror and join the ‘now’, in all its splendid chaos, realness and excitement.”

In our society, where it’s taken for granted that our basic needs are met, our focus is increasingly on hyper-speed convenience, freeing us up to (more…)

Realise Has a Lesson in Business Development

Thursday, October 15th, 2009

Today we welcomed our new employee Fiona to the office. About 6 months ago Fiona approached us for advice on how to move from teaching teenagers Product Design and get ‘into’ the business of Product Design. After lots more discussion on the subject we offered Fiona the position of Business Development Manager, and fortunately she accepted. Amongst many other things, Fi will be developing new and existing client relationships, getting to grips with e-marketing and most importantly making sure that we all get paid on time! (more…)

Round the World Cycling Record Progress

Sunday, October 11th, 2009

Julian Sayarer is doing well on his round the world cycling record attempt. At the time of writing he heading south down the West Coast of the USA, getting close to San Francisco. The cycling is easier than it was through Kazakhstan, but blueberry muffins and the siren smiles of Californian girls seem to be sapping his will. Will he make it or be lost for ever?…

Julian – 12488 miles in 114 days so far = 110 miles per day
World record – 18,000 miles in 175 days = 103 miles per day

Stark Truth Bypassed by Heroic Bicycle Explorer!

Friday, October 2nd, 2009

Philippe Stark recently slammed a student on his “Design for Life” TV show for bringing a bicycle as his answer to an environmentally friendly product. Too Obvious!img_1918

I agreed with Stark that Robert Richardson’s pitch of  “errr… it’s a bike, it doesn’t use as much fuel and stuff” was totally feeble and that the sweat shop origins of the cheap bike were not a social benefit. BUT it was just as shallow to dismiss ‘a bike’ as obvious. They failed to pick up other more subtle and interesting benefits. How about the improvement to health – saving costly healthcare, the social benefit of enjoying a ride with family or friends, olympic success as a cohesive force for Britain etc.

img_1375Perhaps one of the most subtle but important benefits of riding a bike is the awareness it gives us of our present moment and environment. A huge problem in our society is how disconnected we are becoming from our real world , locked in our little boxes, interacting with the world through TV and computers awash with marketing that makes us dissatisfied in order to sell us more stuff. It’s no wonder society is weakening, we’re so confused by how much more stuff we still need to get to achieve perfection that we’re getting distracted by Jordan’s… break up. If we’ve got any hope, we got to become more aware of how this influences our mental state and work to achieve better balance with our reality in the physical world on which we depend for survival. Well, one solution is to get on a bike – which is a great way to explore the world and get some thinking time.

img_1694Now I could round up with a conclusion about the stark reality of our environment falling apart while we all watch Stark on Reality TV… but that seems a bit obvious.

Instead I’d like to prove that cycling is the best way to explore and connect with our world and I urge you to follow our bicycling hero Julian who is currently pedalling around the world… He’s about to start out on the last leg across the USA and is on track to smash the record. Go on, see what Julian has to say on the subject:

Realise at the Buzzing Edge of Innovation

Thursday, October 1st, 2009

thirstybeeWe’ve recently developed a bad habit of making awful bee jokes… but we promise to ‘bee-have’ better in future.  The reason for this sharp drop in our humour quality is Realise has been working with our partners ML Electronics to develop a ‘bee feeding machine’ for start up Inscentinel Ltd.

What?! Why on earth do bees need feeding? Well, this is not because bees are rubbish at feeding themselves, but  that Inscentinel train bees using a food reward system to act as sniffer dogs, or rather, sniffer bees, to be used to sniff out explosives, drugs and even cancer in people.
