New Scientist Catches The Realise Buzz

Wednesday, March 24th, 2010

Here at Realise we are very pleased about our latest magazine fame! New Scientist has written a fantastic piece about a recent product we have been working on which we refer to as the ‘Bee Hotel’. Working alongside ML Electronics, we designed and manufactured a bee training device designed to reward groups of bees with a syrup solution when they detect particular smells.

Bees have a fantastic sense of smell and after a few hours of using the bee hotel, they learn to associate the reward with the odour. The product is currently being tested by UK biotech firm Inscentinel. Have a read of the full New Scientist article, page 19 issue 2752, or read our previous blog article about the innovation & design of the Bee Hotel.

South Coast Design Coverage

Wednesday, November 25th, 2009

Sneak a quick look at SCDF’s (South Coast Design Forum) current newsletter to spot some Realise news in the wild! Our VORTEX 30m TV Camera Mast won the Guild of Television Cameramen seal of approval for best new product – lucky for us the SCDF are proud of this too!

The Vortex took Andrew and the team 3 years to complete and as with any new and innovative creation, the development process did not always run smoothly. However after months of careful planning and meticulous development the Vortex was launched. Winning the award was a great testament to the blood, sweat, tears and cries of joy that went into the Vortex. Well done team!

If anyone has seen the film Dorian Gray, and I don’t mean to sound geeky here, let us know what you thought of the camera work – the Vortex was used to film it!

Realise Has a Lesson in Business Development

Thursday, October 15th, 2009

Today we welcomed our new employee Fiona to the office. About 6 months ago Fiona approached us for advice on how to move from teaching teenagers Product Design and get ‘into’ the business of Product Design. After lots more discussion on the subject we offered Fiona the position of Business Development Manager, and fortunately she accepted. Amongst many other things, Fi will be developing new and existing client relationships, getting to grips with e-marketing and most importantly making sure that we all get paid on time! (more…)

Realise at the Buzzing Edge of Innovation

Thursday, October 1st, 2009

thirstybeeWe’ve recently developed a bad habit of making awful bee jokes… but we promise to ‘bee-have’ better in future.  The reason for this sharp drop in our humour quality is Realise has been working with our partners ML Electronics to develop a ‘bee feeding machine’ for start up Inscentinel Ltd.

What?! Why on earth do bees need feeding? Well, this is not because bees are rubbish at feeding themselves, but  that Inscentinel train bees using a food reward system to act as sniffer dogs, or rather, sniffer bees, to be used to sniff out explosives, drugs and even cancer in people.

Nidecker and Wavesport Design Competitions

ed-burdick-snowboard1

As a young product designer, competitions are one my favourite ways of keeping current with trends whilst  sharpening my skills. Core77, a product design blog and all-round resource site, frequently posts calls for entries into a variety of creative challenges. In the last couple of months, I have put pencil to paper for two of their competitions:

Wavesport Kayaks – Boat Graphics
Nidecker Snowboards – Board Graphics

The Design Council is part of the Design & Technology Alliance Against Crime – aimed at developing technology solutions to stop the baddies from beating us up and nicking our stuff. As part of this they are running a competition to find a way to make mobile phones “non-nickable”. This is great idea, and the best thing is they are throwing some proper money behind it with a total of £400,000 worth of funding for the four winning teams. The requirements are also very clear that each team must consist of technology experts and designers, with a proper design plan for how they are going to develop and implement the idea. (more…)

Vortex Camera Mast in the News

Wednesday, April 22nd, 2009

It is very exciting to see Vortex beginning to raise it’s camera head in the news. After the team’s incredible efforts just getting the Vortex working, then throughout last year working reliably, at last there is more time to be able to talk about it.

We provided the mechanical skeleton for Matthew Gladstone’s concept, making sure there was a stable base to get the camera up smoothly. But it was Tim Oxtoby from Machinery Control Systems who was able to bring Matt’s ideas to life – and even get them under control in the end!

Army Firepower 2009!

Last month, an email landed in my inbox inviting Realise Design to go along to the Army Firepower Demonstration. The demo was billed as an opportunity to see the entire range of weapon systems used by the British Army firing live at targets within a couple of kilometres of the viewing area.

Of course, we accepted the invitation and went as guests of CESO(A) – the health and safety team. We had worked with them last year to produce an exciting new logo to front their worldwide safety campaigns.
